The six best photo editing apps for iPhone, iPad, Android

Once upon a time the idea of editing photos on a phone or tablet was considered folly – akin to painting watercolours on a piece of sponge.

But that's all changed as screens have got sharper and touch control more precise. Plus, with many of us now using smartphones as our main camera, there's no shortage of raw material on them that could benefit from a bit of judicious tweaking before posting to Facebook or Instagram.

And that's where these apps come in: they're the best photo-editing apps we've tried so far.

1. Pixelmator for iPad
Body:

Even if you just want to muck about with its endlessly tweakable filters, Pixelmator would be three quid well-spent. But delve further into the app and you discover a beautiful, usable, powerful touch-optimised image editor, featuring transform tools, layers with effects, and paintbrushes for adding the personal touch. Barg!

Platforms: iPad Price:£2.99

2. Adobe Photoshop Touch
Body:

You’d be daft to expect desktop Photoshop on mobile, but this comes close, with many familiar tools present and correct. The interface is a bit cumbersome, but the app’s hugely capable, especially on tablets, and it has a more professional bent than Pixelmator. Pity about the separate phone/tablet versions though.

Platforms: Android, iOS Price:£2.99 for phone, £6.99 for tablet

3. Pixlr Express
Body:

Pixlr Express feels like quite the oddball, a quirky icon-happy interface always mere seconds away from emitting an explosion of editing effects. But despite its kitchen-sink nature, Pixlr has plenty to offer, from an intuitive focus-blur tool to the dozens of dazzling filters waiting for a thumb tap.

4. VSCO Cam
Body:

VSCO Cam is so chic and serious, it hurts. But the minimalism isn’t just for show — the bold icons and sliders make it very easy to use. Edits and filters in the app are also non-destructive, meaning you can play with, edit, remove and reapply effects until satisfied with your photographic masterwork.

5. Snapseed
Body:

Although you’re still pawing at glass, Snapseed makes photo editing feel tactile. Its rich effects have you swipe up and down to select a parameter and then across your photo to adjust its strength. This affords you a great deal of control, far from the simple single-sliders offered by most free rivals.

6. Typic
Body:

You can still crop, filter and tweak photos in Typic, but this app’s primarily about adding text and icons to your photos. You get four of each, and they can be resized and recoloured. It’s a touch fiddly, but all changes are non-destructive. Android owners, check out the broadly similar (but even fiddlier) Over.

Platforms: iOS Price:£1.49
